We (family with 2 young children) stayed here for 6 nights in October - booked a night on the SPG website and balance of stay on Points+Pay. I was originally concerned that the room might not be able to accommodate the 4 of us, but Conor (front office manager, whose gracious assistance and responsiveness to my various enquiries and requests was above and beyond expectations) was very kind to allocate us a room with 2 double beds. Turned out this is equivalent to a junior suite (very comfortable and spacious, with a lounge/sitting area, walk in robe, bathroom with separate toilet/bidet area). Whilst I understand this upgrade was entirely subject to availability when we actually arrive, we were grateful nonetheless for the effort the hotel went to accommodate my enquiry and concerns.
We were arriving into Paris from Venice via the overnight Artesia train (nightmare of a journey, would not wish it on my worst enemy). Thankfully we had organised to have the hotel send a car to pick us up - I say thankfully as the train was more than an hour late (the least of the indignities we suffered on the train) , and there was a very long queue at the taxi rank. Had we been forced to wait for a taxi, I would have been very late (as opposed to being just a little late) for a business appointment later that morning at the hotel. As it was, not only did the driver wait for us, but the hotel actually informed my business associate that they have tracked my movement from the train station pickup, and was expected to arrive in the hotel in x minutes .... beyond my expectations and more appreciated for it.
Checking in was a pleasant experience with Tikila (??) manning the SPG Platinum Guests desk. I can only describe our interaction with the staff at this hotel as being pleasant and positive in all respects throughout our stay - courtesy, language, etc. - right from the moment of first arrival at the front of the hotel to when we left. We have never learnt how to travel light, so I really appreciated the fact that I did not have to lift a finger with our luggage during the entire stay (even more bags on check-out than when we checked in !). Stephane at the concierge desk was very helpful with suggestions and explaining how best to get the most out of the alternative options for pre-purchased museum tickets, and arranging tickets to the Louvre.
I had a problem logging onto the inroom internet and the hotel was very prompt in sending a technician to assist. Housekeeping only had to be told once of our daily towels and linen requirements - and knowing we had young kids with us, they were very generous with the evening turndown chocolates. Great for the kids, not quite sure it was for the wife and I as the kids were bouncing off the walls on their sugar high on some nights !
Other reviewers for this hotel make mention of how expensive the hotel is - well, it is in Paris, and it is in a fantastic location. And it is a 5 star hotel. I think if one makes a comparison to similar class hotels, I imagine there would probably be relatively little difference. Nonetheless, when travelling as a party of 4, budgetary constraints is inevitable. Plus, being on a combined business-leisure trip we had the luxury of time. So we were not constrained to only the facilities in the hotel, hardly eating at the hotel, instead venturing out to find different places to breakfast most days.
Location next to the Tulleries and Louvre, and within walking distance to Place de la Concorde, Notre Dame, etc meant we walked to most of the attractions we wanted to see. Metro stations all within short walking distance for places further away.
Lots of places to eat and shop in the area if one does not feel like venturing far from the hotel. The Vendome area has a reputation as being a pricey area for shopping - which I guess is relative to what it is one is actually shopping for. We did not have a big budget allocated for shopping but were pleasantly surprised at the prices in places like Longchamp, Printemps and Lafayette in the surrounding area. I guess that would be due to the (surprisingly higher) prices we are used to in the Asia Pacific region.
We did not spend a lot of time in the hotel - we are in Paris afterall why waste it being indoors, but it felt like home each time we returned. It provided us the comfort (luxuriously so!) and a sense of welcome at the end of each day's Parisien adventure.
I can't help but agree with my children when they declare "we want to go back!".
